Video in 2015 & Its Importance in 2016

PRACTICE

Video consumption is a huge part of our daily lives now. Everywhere we look, there’s a form of video entertainment, whether it’s on YouTube, TV, or banner ads. As a fan of film, video and anything video related, I thought it’d be a good idea to see how much video has changed over the years, and how important it’s going to be in the coming years.

Top Picks of 2015

With equipment becoming more accessible, there are hundreds and thousands of ways of creating effective, engaging videos. We’re now coming to the end of this wonderful year and we’ve seen a lot of amazing, fun and innovative videos. It seems in this ever-changing landscape of video authorship we’re getting more and more pieces of video content than ever.

Casey Neistat

Take this YouTuber for example. Often creating his videos with nothing more than a compact digital camera, GoPro or a DSLR, his videos follow a consistent format and three-act structure. His unique storytelling devices make for an entertaining watch from start to finish.

BuzzFeed

From a simple idea by Jonah Peretti to a household name, BuzzFeed has an estimated 69 million multiplatform (Forbes, 2014) audience across the world. They generate a variety of content, from articles, infographics to videos.

Their videos are usually short, snappy, and informative. Take this video for example. Entitled “209 Seconds That Will Make You Question Your Entire Existence”, the video is an educational piece which walks the viewer through the universe and our place within it. The title is deliberately vague and invites the viewer to watch the video to discover what it’s actually about.

GoPro

A brilliant example of how user-generated content can be used as content, GoPro regularly use users’ GoPro footage as videos of the day or their most recent campaign, the GoPro Awards.

Put simply, emotion sells, and this video is a perfect example.

It comes down to whether the content is shareworthy or not. Many of the rules which apply to other types of content, written or otherwise, also apply to video content. It’s about making content which is worth sharing, socially or otherwise.

The picks above are by no means the definitive list of 2015 – they’re videos that stood out to me personally, but there are no doubt more that I didn’t include.

“…in 2019, video will account for over 80% of the world’s internet traffic and almost a million minutes of video will be shared every second.”

It’s easy to see why these videos are as popular as they are. The combination of storytelling and emotionally-driven content, this formula has been tried and tested over the years and it works – as long as it’s done right.

Video in 2016 and Beyond

A report by Cisco carried out in 2014 suggests that in 2019, video will account for over 80% of the world’s internet traffic and almost a million minutes of video will be shared every second.

According to Facebook, video posts created per person has increased 75% across the world and 94% in the U.S. and more than 50% of users who visit Facebook in the States watch at least one video daily.

These statistics are exciting – to think that video will be one of the most significant pieces of content in the years to come makes it all the more the reason it should be included in your social strategy.
